We're sure you've heard the saying, "Nobody's perfect!" And you've probably heard the bumper sticker theology that says, "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven." Well, is that true? Is nobody perfect? Are Christians merely forgiven, but not perfect?
Most believers would agree that Jesus is perfect. Hebrews 7:28 even says that the Son "has been perfected forever." But did you know that the writer of Hebrews uses the phrase "perfected forever" to describe more than just Jesus? Hebrews 10:14 says that through the one offering of Jesus, God has "perfected forever" those who are sanctified! That's you and me!
The book of Hebrews says that through the law nothing could be made perfect, but with Christ "there is the bringing of a better hope, through which we draw near to God" (Hebrews 7:19). This is the very hope through which we've been perfected forever. This is our true identity in Christ. It's true, of course, that we don't always behave perfectly. Our performance doesn't always line up with our true spiritual identity. But that doesn't change our identity. It doesn't change what God has done in us through Christ, because our perfection isn't based upon our performance, but rather it is solely based upon the perfect sacrifice of Christ!
